Why You Need a Content Calendar

Geoffrey Anderson, Editor Content

Whether you’re a big organization or a small company, a content calendar is an essential part of your marketing strategy. Without a content calendar, it’s easy to lose track of content and have it pile up (or not happen at all).

If you’re thinking about creating a content calendar, stop thinking about it and make one – even if it’s just a simple one. Here’s why:

  1. They keep you accountable. Ideas can strike your marketing team at any moment. By having a designated place to put these ideas, you’re more likely to act on them and start building on them; just writing down the topic can get your creative gears going. The next thing you know, you have a brand new blog post lined up with a full distribution schedule and relevant key performance indicators.
  2. They invite collaboration. Storing your calendar on the cloud and giving access to other team members or departments can help bring content to life. Maybe you have a topic for a blog or video but aren’t sure how to go about it. An outside perspective can be helpful in turning that seed of an idea into something a lot bigger.
  3. They let you plan resources. In an ideal world, you’d have a limitless marketing budget. Unfortunately, that’s not the case – especially at smaller organizations. By being organized and having content and distribution already fleshed out in advance, you can ensure that your resources are always being strategically used and that deadlines aren’t missed.
  4. They help build up a repository of content. New content doesn’t have to be “new.” That content you ran for a holiday or event last year could probably be published again with just a few changes. By having a paper trail of the content you’ve run, you can spot items that can be recycled and save you a lot of time. Remember: It’s easier to update content than it is to produce something from scratch.
