Since the early beginnings of search engine optimization, backlinks have played a vital role in page rank. “Get more backlinks” was one solution that marketing experts all agreed on back then, and backlinks continue to be a part of most organic marketing plans.
However, that advice is easier said than done. It’s easy to get backlinks, but getting quality backlinks is a different story. How do you get websites of quality to actually link back to your page? It can take a bit of legwork, but it’s far from impossible. Here are some tips to help you in your outreach efforts.
- Produce good content. Write for humans and not for search engines. Keywords are great and all, but in the end, you’re writing for prospects and customers. The more high-quality content you produce, the more you’re seen as an industry expert. And the more you’re seen as an industry expert, the more you’re likely to be cited (and linked to).
- Help reporters out. Help a Reporter Out and other services link industry experts with journalists and other content producers in specific niches. Sign up for healthcare alerts and when an opportunity arrives that’s a good fit for your organization, pounce on it. On that note, don’t look for the whales if you’re just starting out. Have your organization’s experts interviewed for local or community outlets, so they have a track record? The more you put your brand out, the more you’ll get cited (see #1 above).
- Snoop on your competitors. If you’re not sure where to start, begin with your competition. Moz and other platforms allow you to see your competitors’ backlinks. It’s likely there are sites listed there that you never even thought of. Take a look and see what pops up – if a site looks like it’s a good fit, get in touch with the owner/editor about the possibility of a guest blog or other link-building opportunities.
